1973 Ford F100 Ranger XLT, SWB, PS, PB, 351ci V8, a True Time Capsule!
In 1973, Ford's motto for its line of pickup trucks was "works like a truck, rides like a car." While they might not compare to today's cars, the '73 Ford pickups were definitely an improvement over previous versions, and sales reflected it. Ford had three lines: Custom, Ranger, and Ranger XLT, with the latter being top of the line.
What you see here is an excellent example of what the short-wheelbase 1973 F100 Ranger XLT package offered. Presented in a Mint Green over Wimbledon White with chrome side rails, this truck has withstood the test of time. Pickup trucks were obviously used, abused, and then traded in, but this one appears it lived a pampered life. The body is in solid shape — even the cab corners look good. It seems to have had a repaint in the past, and it still shines nicely. The bed floor is in excellent condition; it's hard to believe this truck carried any cargo. The trim is in decent shape but does show some aging on the bumpers and grille area, while the tailgate shows some dings from use. Brand-new, 15-inch slotted-aluminum USMag wheels were recently added, which fit the truck's look quite well.
The engine bay has a clean structure with tidy wiring in the original locations. The original small block was replaced with a two-valve 351ci Jasper crate engine that looks right at home between the frame rails. It presents itself in nice driver-quality condition with air-conditioning, power steering, and power brakes (disc in front, drum in rear). Power transfers to the limited-slip rearend through an automatic transmission, which shifts as it should. This is a sound running vehicle.
The interior presents like it was straight off the assembly line, with only a few minor changes noticeable. Original door panels match the seat cover, which appears to be new but still in keeping with the scheme of color-keyed quilted cloth with vinyl upholstery. The wall-to-wall carpeting is color-matched as well. The dash is in very good condition with wood-tone inserts that match the steering wheel. The instrument panel still shows well. A Vintage Air system is installed in the original location above the AM/FM radio. The column shifter affords the occupants some much-needed legroom should you have two friends along for the ride.
This is a reliable early-'70s pickup that can be enjoyed as-is or use it as a foundation for a custom buildup. You can't go wrong either way; this '73 is as solid as they come. Feel free to stop by the Art & Speed showroom and take it for a test drive!
